Mughal style white marble mausoleum, inlaid with semi-precious stones & nicknamed the 'Baby Taj'.via Google
The first Mughal structure built entirely of white marble, featuring delicate, precursor inlay work that inspired the Taj Mahal.
- Good to know
- €. Much quieter and less crowded than the Taj Mahal, making it ideal for peaceful photography at sunset.

Often called the “Baby Taj,” this elegant monument is one of Agra’s finest architectural gems. It was built between 1622 and 1628 by Nur Jahan in memory of her father, Mirza Ghiyas Beg (Itimad-ud-Daulah), a respected noble in the Mughal court. This tomb is historically significant as it is considered a major architectural precursor to the Taj Mahal. It was the first Mughal monument constructed entirely of white marble, marking a shift from red sandstone structures. The intricate pietra dura (marble inlay) work, delicate floral motifs, geometric patterns, and beautifully carved marble jaalis were design elements later perfected in the Taj Mahal. In many ways, this monument laid the artistic foundation for the grandeur that followed. The structure looks especially stunning during sunrise and sunset when the soft golden light enhances the fine details of the marble. Compared to larger monuments, it is less crowded, allowing visitors to explore peacefully. The well-maintained gardens and serene ambiance make it a must-visit for those who appreciate history, symmetry, and refined craftsmanship. Entry Fee: 20/- per person. Collect Shoe Cover before rising the platform.
It has a completely different vibe compared to the bigger monuments because it is so quiet, and relaxed. The first thing that strikes you is how peaceful the entire complex feels. Standing inside with the soft light filtering through the screens was a beautiful experience. It is absolutely worth adding to your itinerary when you are in Agra!
The Tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah is a 17th century Mughal mausoleum in Agra, commissioned by Empress Nur Jahan for her father, Mirza Ghiyas Beg, between 1622 and 1628. Also known as the Baby Taj or a jewel box, it is renowned as the first Mughal structure to use white marble completely. The sunset views are great as it is built along the river Yamuna. The place is not very crowded and is quiet and serene. Paid parking is available outside.
Ironically I found it way more fun and pretty than the Taj Mahal, as there was little to no crowd and it was a peaceful little area. It looked extremely pretty in the sunset, wish i can come back here once i get a proper camera.
India Trip Reviews 25/many Trip detail- Gate 1 Travels' 12 Day Golden Triangle of India with Varanasi How much time should you expect to spend here? ~45 minutes Known commonly as the Baby, or Bachcha Taj, the I'timād-ud-Daulah Maqbara is the predecessor to the more famous Taj Mahal. It is also known as the jewel box because of its shape, and compared to the much more famous building, there are a couple of major pros. First off, it is obviously a lot less crowded, with many friendly people working on the grounds. Second, the interior, which contains the cenotaph, is detailed, unlike the much plainer inside of the Taj. I liked stopping here to marvel at the architecture and would recommend you do so to compare the two Tajs.
